  • This book aims to describe in-depth decisions about maternal care with up-to-date and practical knowledge that improves obstetric and perinatal outcomes of the mother-baby binomial.

    Developed in seven chapters, with dozens of figures, it begins by describing the physiological, hormonal, immunological, and enzymatic events produced in mother-fetus communication between the onset of regular uterine contractions, through labor, birth, and delivery, until the puerperium. In this context, the Friedman curve and the new studies and definitions established by Dr. Zhang and his group are compared. It is explained how the partograph must be filled out properly, relating to the alterations of labor known as dystocia, and recommendations are given for timely diagnosis and relevant interventions.

    A chapter on electronic fetal monitoring is included, emphasizing antepartum and intrapartum interpretation and its clinical utility. Multiple examples are presented with recording graphs and correlated with fetal acid-base status.

    Postpartum hemorrhage is addressed. It is a foreseeable event secondary to childbirth, whose mortality is almost always avoidable. For this reason the authors develop the topic including pathophysiology, etiology, risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, and diagnostic aids, medical and surgical interventions according to the cause.

    For the authors, this book could not fail to include a chapter on labor induction. Bearing in mind that a properly carried out practice can reduce the number of cesarean sections and maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, the indications, contraindications, risks, and different methods to end the pregnancy by vaginal delivery are presented.

    The last chapter deals with the normal puerperium and the pathologies frequently found in women after childbirth and ends with the protocol of the postpartum control appointment.

    This book has been created after the simple observation of three professors from the Universidad del Valle who, from their day-to-day work, mainly at the Hospital Universitario del Valle “Evaristo García,” concluded that students and professionals from different health careers involved in maternal care could improve their knowledge regarding labor, delivery and the puerperium; and that although there are texts available in the literature on obstetrics in general, and that most of them are of good academic quality, none of them is dedicated exclusively to addressing physiological processes and their alterations during labor, delivery, and the puerperium as in the book Vaginal Delivery, as the Obstetrician Would Say.

Obtuvo su titulo de Medico y cirujano de la Universidad del Valle, la cual representó  como  estudiante  de  pregrado  en  congreso  de  investigación  obteniendo  varios  premios,  el  mas  importante  en  el  año  2000  el  “XI  premio  Aventis  Academia  Nacional  de  Medicina”  al  mejor  trabajo  de  investigación  en  el  área  clínica.  También  de  la  Universidad  del  Valle  se  gradúo  de  Ginecólogo  Obstetra  y  como  Magister  en  Ciencias  Básicas  Medicas con énfasis en Embriología y Genética. Su trabajo de grado logro mención meritoria. En el “V Congreso Mundial de Perinatología y XXVI Congreso Colombiano de Obstetricia y Ginecología”, en el 2008 en Cartagena, obtuvo el primer lugar en la categoría de trabajos libres de investigación en perinatología. También  gano  el  premio  al  mejor  trabajo  de  investigación  en  “XXVII  Congreso Colombiano de Obstetricia y Ginecología”, en Cali, en 2010.Ademas  tiene  múltiples  publicaciones  en  revistas  indexadas  nacionales  e  internacionales,  entre  ellas:  Colombia  Médica, Revista  Colombiana  de  Ginecología y Obstetricia, Birth Defects y American Journal of Medical Genetics

Biografía:

Assistant professor in the Gynecology-Obstetrics and Family Medicine department at the Universidad del Valle. Physician specializing in Gynecology and Obstetrics from the Universidad del Valle and a specialist in Health Services Administration from the Universidad de Antioquia.

He worked as a specialist physician at the Hospital Universitario del Valle “Evaristo García,” also holding positions in the Management of the UES of Gynecology, Medical Direction, and as the director of the Teaching-Attending Office.

His professional journey includes several published articles in books and medical journals, and author of the book ‘Pharmacology of Iron.’ Prof. Canaval has been recognized for their leadership in various scientific societies, where he has held senior management positions, including Fecopen, Sovogin, and Asomenopausia. Currently, Prof. Carnaval is the first vice president of the Latin American Federation of Climacteric and Menopause Societies (FLASCYM). He is also a regular academic speaker at national and international medical congresses focusing on gynecology and obstetrics, where share his expertise and insights.

He coordinates the undergraduate Medicine students in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Universidad del Valle.

Biografía:

Physician and surgeon specializing in Gynecology-Obstetrics and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from the Universidad del Valle. Associate professor at the School of Medicine (Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics) and the School of Public Health (Master’s degree in Epidemiology) of the Universidad del Valle, director of the MUGER research group (Universidad del Valle Working Group on Gestation, Endocrinology and Reproduction, by its acronym in Spanish). Within his investigative work, he has published 15 articles in indexed journals, 12 categorized in Scopus, directed 12 theses for a Master’s in Epidemiology, and published multiple chapters on topics in the specialty. His research work has obtained distinction in national congresses.
